baby stuff

little baby romper

9:25:00 PM

You'd think every post I did would be about pink and girly things, but it has actually been a hard adjustment that I'm still trying to make. I've been finding that boy clothes and things have gotten more cute in the past two years, and it seems girl clothes have become more cheesy. Hence, I'm still having a hard time breaking out of blue, boys and car mode.

My sister is having a baby this weekend, and I made this for her new little one. Is it weird that I really wanted one for myself? It seems like a girl version just wouldn't be quite as cute.

I didn't follow a true pattern for this and it was somewhat liberating. It was nice not to slave over a pattern just so I would have it again, and it was simpler than I thought it would be. I based it off of Jack's blessing outfit, but I like it better in the blue pinstripe with the belt. Don't you?

My sister said it reminded her of the store Janie and Jack. Have you ever seen their stuff? So lovely. I especially like this swimsuit.

apologies for being mia

12:05:00 AM

Just wanted to check in really quick to explain the lack of posts- pretty much, I'm really busy. Mostly, I'm working on a book of the transcription of my great-grandfather's L.D.S. mission. This has included transcribing, collecting, formatting and learning a new program (InDesign). Let's just say that by the end of this, I could make another book in half the time hopefully- just from learning from trial and error. I'm also finishing up teaching a sewing class, and trying to be more social during the day so Jack can learn how to have friends. :)

Projects? I've been starting a lot of them, but finishing? Not yet. The main project I've been working on is a Moses basket. I wish I could tell you that it has been very fun and terribly rewarding, but honestly, it's not worth it. Now, if I were reading this, I don't think it would stop me from trying if I was very determined. To try to stop you from doing it, here are some of my complaints: my shoulders are very tense from sewing on the canvas I'm using, I've broken five needles, and I think the timing is now off on my machine. I'm in the middle of the last step. Tonight I told Rob that there seems to be nothing fun about this project. Okay, well, there was one thing fun: I learned how to braid with four strands. I'm using braided canvas for the handles. I think an industrial sewing machine would fix most of the problems, so if you have access to one, go ahead and make a Moses basket!

After the Moses basket is done, I have the mattress, sheet and bumper liner left to do. I've also picked out colors for the kids' room when they share- very excited about that. I also have some very pretty baby blankets ready to whip up. I have some baby clothes and maternity clothes to get in as well. (is it worth it to make a whole maternity shirt with only 2 1/2 months left? haven't decided yet.) I'm thinking by the end of the week, I'll finally get to some of these projects, but we'll see. Jack is sick, so hopefully, I don't get it, or if I do, I'll just feel the same because I'm nauseated a lot of the time anyway.

pretty as a peacock

12:53:00 PM

Peacocks have actually been my inspiration for a lot of my outfits over the past year or so. The colors are so rich and elegant. I would post a picture of some outfits I've put together of my own clothes, but, to be honest, I don't really want to do get all ready and do a photoshoot. Besides, maternity clothes wouldn't be very useful for many of you.

I've put together some design boards of different color combos to wear to pull of the subtle peacock look. I'm sure you could look in your closet and come up with something awesome. The main thing is to find something really great to focus your colors and outfit on. It should be especially unique and peacock-y. The central piece for each of these outfits is in the center of the design board. When I think of peacock, I think of rich blues, greens, purples, and turquoise. I like to throw in a little citrus green too.

 Happy Dressing!

peacock embellishment

1:27:00 PM

Need an elegant embellishment for the perfect gift, a party or a centerpiece? Here is a tutorial on how to make an elegant paper peacock to enhance your item.

Supplies:

  • bright blue paper
  • teal and blue tissue paper
  • scrap newspaper
  • peacock template
  • bright blue glitter
  • Elmer's glue
  • sponge paintbrush
  • scissors
  • stapler
  •  curly gift ribbon
Peacock template
Click on picture, go to edit, select all, copy, paste and size larger peacock to 2 inches high.

1.  Cut out the peacock using the template out of the bright blue paper. Glue and glitter the smaller peacock. Let dry.

2. Glue the glittered peacock to the larger peacock.

3. Cut out a 5"x6" square of the teal tissue paper. Cut out a 6"x8" square of the blue paper.

4.  Glue and glitter the bottom edges of the tissue paper. Let dry.

5. Accordion fold the teal and blue tissue paper.

6.  With the tissue paper folded, round the bottom edges of both pieces of tissue paper.

It should look something like this (obviously I wasn't a perfectionist in the glittering.

7. Layer the teal tissue paper on top of the blue tissue paper. Bring the top together and staple.

8.  Place the feather fan under the paper peacock and glue.

9. Tie some curly thread around the paper tail of the peacock.

10. Attach to a gift bag, place on top of a plate, or place inside a floral centerpiece. Add a few more ribbons if needed.

peacock fabric

1:04:00 PM

I went on a search for beautiful peacock fabric prints and came across Dena Designs (see more about her here). Here is her peacock bird line. Look how pretty and in all different colorways!

I may be boring, but I like the white version the best.

Peacock Designs from Serena and Lily

    4:16:00 PM

Have you ever heard of Serena and Lily? I get their catologs quarterly and devour them as soon as they come in the mail. The design style is so beautiful. They have bedding for adults children and babies as well as really cool accesories. I have to show you the peacock designs they have.

(This clutch motivates me almost just enough to sit and embroider this design on something. Almost. :))

They also have  a whole bedding collection with this gorgeous peacock theme:

I've seen a coupon code floating around the the Peacock Gypsy Tote for 20% off in honor of Mother's day, but I didn't write it down. I'll post it if I find it again.
