Bees

9:13:00 PM

The beautiful poster above is by Hannah Rosengren. (She sells this print in postcard and minicard size too!)

When I first started this blog, I had a yearly tradition of writing a series for favorite animals. The last animal series I did was a bee series and let's just say I completely fell in love. If it weren't for the likelihood that we will move this summer, I would be trying my hand at keeping bees. Meanwhile, Rob and I have been researching them, taking classes and getting excited to start (hopefully next year). You may not have known, but bee populations are disappearing worldwide. Loosing bees would have a HUGE impact on our ability to have fresh fruits, nuts, flowers and veggies.

Since keeping bees won't happen this year, our family will have to settle for helping the bees how we can. Here is a  I'm looking forward to planting some of these flowers and herbs. Anyone can help save the bees!

I'm resurfacing the bee series to help introduce my felt bumble bee pattern. This beautiful piece is perfect for spring. The pattern, along with kits will debut in my shop soon!

You are Beautiful

lds, body made in the image of god, love your body

I recently did a presentation on body image for the women in my church. While researching what our church leaders had to say about body image, this message came through loud and clear. It was so enlightening to me, I wanted to share.

With unrealistic and modified images of "the ideal woman" being thrown at us left and right, it's hard not to get caught up in false beliefs of what we "should" look like/be like. If you're struggling with body image, I encourage you to learn more of God's love for you.  Also, here are some good links to help you along your way:

Also, here is a printable bookmark I made for the occasion. To print, choose the double-sided printing option and flip along the long edge.

modern temple, lds, mormon temple

I'm a Mormon. In our church we have beautiful temples. They mean a lot to us. They mean forever families, a peaceful place to worship, the house of God, a place of learning, and a place of faith. My husband and I were married in the Bountiful Temple. It was a beautiful, wonderful, spiritual day. I'm so grateful for the peace that temples bring me.

If you had not had a chance to visit a temple, I strongly encourage it. To go inside a temple, special and sacred promises are made. This includes being baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (or becoming a "Mormon".) Learn more, here.

Payson, UT Temple open house (May 2015)

There are temples being built all around the world. The Church holds open houses before they are dedicated and anyone and everyone is invited to tour the inside of the temple. Anyone and everyone is also invited to visit the beautiful gardens surrounding our temples. I can testify that peace can be strongly felt there as well.

We believe it's important to teach our children the significance of the temple, so we teach and sing about temples a lot.

I love to see the temple,
I'm going there someday,
To feel the Holy Spirit,
To listen and to pray.
For the temple is a house of God,
A place of love and beauty.
I'll prepare myself while I am young.
This is my sacred duty.

Happy Valentine's Day!

9:42:00 AM

Valentine's Day. Some hate it, some love it. I like to see it as a time to express my love to family and friends. It's fun to reach out and let people know you love them. In high school, I had a friend who gave a rose to each of her friends for V. Day. What a kind thought! I felt so special. With so much negativity going on, what could be a better time to show people you care. Happy Valentine's Day!

Easy Heart T-shirt

easy tutorials, heart fashion, kids style, sewing projects

Everybody excited for Valentine's Day?  I think I mostly love Valentine's Day because it give me something to look forward to in winter. Valentine's Day provides so many opportunities for fun creativity and... pink. I love pink. I also love love. It comes in so many forms and is such a wonderful thing to celebrate!

Today I want to share with you an easy project to help you in your festivities this Valentine's Day--an appliqued heart t-shirt! This is a great project for beginning and experienced sewers alike!

Supplies:
-a t-shirt
-colored knit fabric (about 7"x7")
-wonder under
-matching thread

DIY sewing, heart

Step 1: Draw or trace a heart onto the paper side of Wonder-Under.

Step 2: Cut heart out and iron onto wrong side of colored knit fabric following manufacturer's instructions.

Step 3: Cut fabric around heart.

Step 4: Iron heart onto t-shirt following manufacturer's instructions.

Step 5: Sew around the edges of the heart. If you're having trouble making it even and straight, don't worry too much! Look to step 6--

*Tip: DO make sure you are only sewing through the top layer of the t-shirt.

Applique, sewing projects

Step 6: Continue stitching around the heart until you've gone around 3 times. This is mostly to mask "mistakes" so that they look intentional. Just keep sewing. If you're not super far off as you go around, it will look good. :)

See? It's supposed to have a more relaxed, "artistic" look.

Put it on and go about in style!

Q and A

Why does the heart need to be made from knit fabric?
  • Knit fabric doesn't fray. Although a flowery quilting cotton would be cute, you would have to finish the edges of the heart differently to prevent fraying.

What if I want the heart to be white or a very light color?
  • Take a preliminary step of applying knit interfacing to the heart fabric so the heart will be more opaque.

More Animal Finger Puppet Valentines

1:56:00 PM

I while back, I made these finger puppet Valentines. They have been such a hit with with our family and friends! Over the years I have been refining them to fit our printing and immediate use needs, so here is this year's version! I've added a dinosaur,a frog, a panda, a duck, a giraffe, and a cheetah.

I never have enough (or any) colored ink in my printer, so these are strictly formatted to be printed on colored card stock. The animal puppets are grouped by color rather than type of animal.

The file suggests colors for each page. The Valentine message is part of the puppet so you can punch the holes before giving away. This way, the receiver can play with the puppets right away! You will like making these much more if you use a 5/8" circle punch. :) Trust me, I've hand-cut a lot of circles.

Hope you and your littles enjoy! Download the new version of the Animal Finger Puppet Valentines!
